Ceramics a brief dive into history, how it is made and why it is eco-friendly

Welcome lovers of design and the timeless charm of handicrafts. Today we delve into a world thousands of years old, rich in history and tradition: the world of ceramics.

Ceramics has a history as old as mankind itself, dating back to the Stone Age. The use of clay mixed with water to create utensils and works of art is a practice that has spanned centuries and cultures, from prehistoric times through ancient Greece to the present day. Pottery has always played a fundamental role in daily life, spirituality and art.

The process of making pottery is an art that requires patience, precision and a deep understanding of materials. It all starts with clay, a natural substance extracted from the earth, which is worked until it becomes malleable.

Pottery can be made by hand or industrially. The main difference between handmade and industrial ceramics lies in the production process. Artisanal ceramics are handmade by skilled craftsmen who practise ancient techniques handed down through the ages. This process requires time, attention to detail and great craftsmanship.
In handmade production, the first step is the creation of the desired shape using clay. This is modelled by hand or using a potter's wheel.
Once the basic shape of the object has been obtained, the ceramic is left to dry completely. This is followed by an initial firing called 'biscuit', during which the clay is transformed into hard ceramic.
After this stage, the object can be decorated with coloured glazes or customised engravings. Once the desired glazes or decorations have been applied, a second firing at high temperatures is carried out to fix them permanently on the object.
The types of ceramics can vary depending on the type of clay used and the processing technique employed. For example, there are different varieties such as terracotta (characterised by an orange-brown colour), stoneware (which has a more resistant surface) and porcelain (which is known for its delicacy and transparency).

But what makes ceramic so perfect for vases, tableware and home decoration? First of all, its durability. Ceramic is an extremely durable material that can withstand scratches and shocks. Moreover, thanks to its low porosity, it is ideal for holding liquids, making it the perfect choice for plates, cups and vases. Finally, ceramics can be painted and decorated in an infinite number of ways, allowing for the creation of unique and customised pieces.

And let's not forget that ceramic is an eco-friendly choice. Being made of natural materials, it does not pollute the environment like some synthetic materials (plastic). Moreover, the long lifespan of ceramics reduces the need to replace items frequently, helping to reduce waste.

Ceramic art is not just about aesthetics or functionality: it is also a way to support the environment. By choosing handmade ceramic products, we not only take home a unique piece, we also help support the environment.

Ceramics is an art that speaks of history, culture and sustainability. It is a choice that reflects a love for beauty, functionality and respect for the environment. We hope this article has given you an in-depth insight into the world of ceramics and inspired you to consider this option the next time you are shopping for your home.
